Grey Nurse Shark (Carcharias taurus)

The Grey Nurse shark (Carcharias taurus) is found around the world, although with different names. In South Africa they are known as Ragged Tooth sharks. In the Americas they are known as Sand Tiger sharks. But here in Australia they are known as Grey Nurse sharks. Despite having populations around the world, each cluster has become genetically distinct. The East Coast of Australia population is one of the most studied populations in the world, and this is how we know that they are still critically endangered with a very low population of breeding adults. You can learn a lot more about this species and the research that I do using photo-ID techniques to study them by following my Spot a Shark page. These sharks can grow to a maximum of 3.2m in length, are born at about 1m in length, and are found year round in Sydney (with higher numbers in summer). The best spots to see them in Sydney include Long Reef (The Apartments dive site) in the summer, Magic Point, Bondi and Blue Fish Point and some other nearby spots in Manly. They are usually only in small numbers of around 5 sharks but it is an incredible experience to dive with them.
