Sydney Dive Calendar

Summer in Sydney (Dec, Jan, Feb)

  • Outside air temperature averages 25-27c
  • Water temperature averages 20-23c
  • Visibility drops with the algae blooms and additional plankton in the water
  • Longest days where diving is possible for much of the day (with night dives typically delayed until 8pm at night)
  • Top marine life for summer months includes the docile Grey Nurse sharks and tropical fish like cowfish
  • Plan early starts to get best parking spots

Autumn in Sydney (Mar, Apr, May)

  • Outside air temperature averages 20-25c
  • Water temperature averages 18-21c
  • Cyclones are common in northern Queensland, which can mean swell is more common
  • Visibility improves underwater
  • Giant Cuttlefish become common to see

Winter in Sydney (Jun, Jul, Aug)

  • Outside air temperature drops to 16-19c
  • Water temperature averages 16-18c
  • Whale migration (south direction) over June and July means you can hear whales singing underwater
  • Visibility improves and can be 10-15m 
  • It is more common to see the Wobbegong sharks, Port jackson sharks and Crested Hornsharks on dives
  • Temperate fish migrate up to Sydney and large schools of fish are common

Spring in Sydney (Sep, Oct, Nov)

  • Outside air temperature averages 20-24c
  • Water temperature averages 17-21c
  • Whale migration (north direction) over September and October means you can hear whales singing underwater
  • Visibility drops with more groundswells creating greener water
  • Start to see baby port jackson sharks in the harbour and on sandy patches
