Despite the normal poor visibility of 5m this dive site is fantastic for macro. There are huge sponge gardens teaming with nudibranchs. The rarely seen Red Indianfish is found here, and also the photogenic flying gurnards. At times you can also find various types of anglerfish here. The blue gropers here are super friendly and you can also see some of the bigger marine life like wobbegong sharks. The colourful bommies are the best of Sydney. I love this dive site and almost always find something new almost every time I go.
The dive site is on the edge of a national park (popular with newly weds) and the diving is within Botany Bay. It is a beautiful site for divers and for land lubbers alike which makes this a great site for a picnic after the dive. Diving at Bare Island is not easy and so it is highly recommended that it is organised through a guided shore dive from Dive Centre Bondi. This dive site is dependent on safe sea conditions as getting in and out the water can be quite tricky. There can also be boats in the area which means ascending with an SMB / safety sausage is essential. I would suggest that divers who are unfamiliar with Bare Island take guided shore dives here until familiar with the area as there have been fatalities at this site so safety should be top priority. There are many different dives that you can have at Bare Island and so you are likely to see something new every time. I have had fun spending time over the sandy patches, the weeds, the rocks and boulders, the walls and the sponge gardens . Every dive will result in seeing different marine life so it is a great dive site to do again and again! |
