This is a fairly common, year-round type of carpet shark, known as the Banded Wobbegong shark (or Gulf Wobbgegong shark). Found both in the harbour and in the ocean side dive sites. These sharks can grow to almost 3m in length. If you imagine drawing a horizontal line through the middle of Australia, these sharks only live in the bottom range of coast line from Sunshine Coast in QLD, round the southern part of Australia and up as far as Coral Bay in Western Australia. To find them, look under rocky shelves or on rocky platforms and don't be surprised to be amazed at how well camouflaged they are! All wobbegong sharks are ovoviviparous sharks. This means their pups develop inside eggs within the female's body until they are ready to hatch and then they give birth to live young. When born, they look almost identical to the adult form, just with smaller proportions.
